One Nation Endorses Thom Tillis’ Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act

July 11, 2019

One Nation, a public policy organization dedicated to promoting commonsense legislative solutions, is endorsing the Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act introduced by Senator Thom Tillis in the United States Senate yesterday.

The bill includes three main tenets:

• Defining a “sanctuary jurisdiction” as a “political subdivision (including a county or city) that has a statute, ordinance, policy, or practice that restricts a government official or entity from receiving or maintaining information about the immigration status of an individual, including refusing to comply with lawful detainer requests made by DHS or the notification of the release of an illegal immigrant.”
• Establishing a legal remedy for families of victims of crimes by illegal immigrants within a sanctuary jurisdiction.
• Withholding grant funding for any sanctuary jurisdiction that refuses to comply with the law.

In defiance of federal law, sanctuary cities provide safe harbor for criminal illegal immigrants by ignoring detainment orders and releasing them into our communities. Over a 19 month period, more than 300 sanctuary jurisdictions rejected over 17,000 detainees, about 12,000 of which were issued for immigrants with prior criminal records. Sanctuary cities, such as Philadelphia and San Francisco, have seen heinous crimes. It is well past time for our elected officials to protect Americans and crack down on this unlawful and dangerous policy.

“One Nation has a long track record of advocating against lawless ‘sanctuary cities’ that put their own residents at risk in the name of liberal ideology. Senator Tillis’ legislation holds rogue jurisdictions accountable and protects law-abiding citizens from dangerous criminals who have also broken our immigration laws. We’re in this fight for the long haul and are encouraged that Senator Tillis and his colleagues are committed to making our communities safer.” -One Nation Communications Director Jack Pandol
